EVANSVILLE JOINs MAYORS FOR PEACE, calling for WORLDWIDE NUCLEAR DISARMAMENT

On November 1, 2022, Mayor’s for Peace announced Evansville’s membership in its global coalition—8222 cities in 166 countries calling for the total elimination of nuclear weapons and standing in support of the UN’s sustainable development goals (SDGs). Evansville’s decision to join Mayors for Peace was announced in a proclamation by Mayor Lloyd Winnecke on September 21, 2022, which he designated as Evansville Peace Day.

Mayor Winnecke acted with encouragement and support of Veterans For Peace, which advocates “peace at home” as a prerequisite for peace abroad. The move underscores our city’s commitment to the wellbeing of residents and its solidarity with people around the world who aspire to live in peace. As a member city, Evansville will host events to educate the public on the danger of nuclear proliferation and encourage thinking that finds alternatives to militarization.

Mayors for Peace was founded in 1981 by the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, two cities devastated by the first deployment of nuclear bombs in 1945. Evansville, is the third city in Indiana to join Mayors for Peace, and joins its sister cities Osnabrück, Germany, and Tochigi, Japan, as a member.
