Member Larry Miller cultivated the young tree from a seedling of a m… — Members of VFP Evansville Chapter 104 and the public gather at Oak Hill Cemetery on November 11 to dedicate a small linden tree as a living monument to humanity’s desire for peace. Member Larry Miller cultivated the young tree from a seedling of a mature linden tree brought to the U.S. from Germany in 1912 by the Freudenburg family. On the occasion of the Armistice (November 11, 1918) the family dedicated the tree to peace on their farm in northern Vanderburgh County where it thrives to this day. In a brief dedication ceremony, Gary May delivered remarks on the need to focus on the Armistice vis a vis on Veterans. Member Larry Miller recounted his experience with nurturing the young tree to viability. And Freudenberg descendent Beth Skeels spoke about her family’s legacy and thanked VFP for its efforts to build awareness for peace. VFP Chapter 104 is especially grateful to Chris Cooke at Oak Hill Cemetery and to City Arborist Shawn Dickerson for their help in making this monument a reality. Image courtesy ABCNews 25.

VFP associate member DAVID SWANSON, writer and activist, dispelled the notion that there is anything good or necessary about war on September 26 before a local audience at UE. Touch of Grey covers rock hits from the 60s at the Deerhead in Evansville, Indiana, on Septebmer 21, 2019—International Peace Day. The event raised awareness for peace and funds to help support the Veterans For Peace Chapter 104 Peace Scholarship.

International Peace Day Observance — September 21, 2019 — Four Freedoms Monument — Evansville, Indiana

Members of Veterans For Peace in Evansville gathered today, the International Day of Peace, to honor humanity’s quest for peace—and to share a statement on “Climate Action for Peace” that sees an end to militarism as essential to a sustainable future. (Read the statement.)

Local member Larry Miller presented a viable young linden, a start from the original International World War Peace Tree in northern Vanderburgh County. Miller and VFP 104 are gifting the planting to the City of Evansville as a gesture of good will, symbolizing the belief that peace is possible when rooted in non-violence, justice, and respect for all people.
