Mayoral Proclamation: September 21, 2022, is Evansville Peace Day
In concert with people of conscience the world over who observe September 21 as an international day of peace, Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke has issued a proclamation designating the day as Evansville Peace Day. Within the text of the proclamation is the assertion that Mayor Winnecke has set his signature to the vision of Mayors for Peace, an international coalition of 8,200+ cities advocating for the total prohibition of nuclear weapons. The text of the proclamation is as follows:
Whereas Evansville aspires to be a city in which residents can live, work, worship, and raise families in peace; and
Whereas, heightened tensions among nuclear-armed nations present an existential threat to every city on the planet; and
Whereas, this threat denies the people of Evansville the natural right to freedom from fear; and
Whereas, I have set my signature to the vision of “Mayors for Peace,” joining more than 8,000 cities around the globe in calling for the total prohibition of nuclear weapons; then
Therefore, be it resolved that I, Lloyd Winnecke, Mayor of the City of Evansville, do hereby proclaim September 21, 2022, as Evansville Peace Day in the City of Evansville, Indiana.
Members of Veterans For Peace Chapter 104 in Evansville will gather at 11 am at the Four Freedoms Monument on Evansville’s scenic riverfront to read the proclamation. The event will feature live music and brief remarks explaining the implications of Evansville’s membership in Mayors for Peace. All are invited to attend.
