VFP 104 Mourns the Passing of Phil Hoy
We lost a tireless leader for social justice, peace, and kindness with the passing of Phil Hoy. Phil was a friend of mine, and I was happily involved as a presenter in his annual assemblies for change at Zion Church in Henderson. These events always left me feeling restored and reenergized.
Phil's life of integrity and justice fueled the activities of countless advocates and organizations, including me and my engagement with our local chapter of Veterans For Peace (VFP). Always one to be a doer when he could, he officiated my daughter's marriage in 2006, his emerging retirement notwithstanding.
Phil was present at several VFP actions, many of which took place at the Four Freedoms Monument. Even when his illnesses were compromising his mobility, he would show up with his broad smile, a warm greeting, his walker, and the support of his wife, Sandra, and some members of his large extended family.
At VFP Annual Conventions, the passing of members is noted with the tolling of a bell and members saying "Presente" in unison. Phil earned such a goodbye with such a tribute, so as you go to sleep tonight, imagine the bell and quietly whisper "presente" as you think of Phil. Even if you didn't know him, he changed things that are probably important to you.
I know that Phil is entertaining fellow time travelers with his magic! I love you, Phil, thanks for all you taught me and for your inspiration.
